Our Thoughts on the Leica SL3-P
Looking at the new Leica SL3-P on paper is one thing. What do we actually think after spending real time with it?
The most complete SL yet.The SL3-P is the most complete, well-rounded SL camera to date. It is for the photographer who wants a body they can throw anything at, and it handles it without skipping a beat.
44 megapixels is the sweet spot.Unless you are chasing the absolute maximum resolution from your APO SL lenses at low ISO, or you need the continuous video recording of the SL3-S, 44 MP strikes the perfect middle ground: more than enough resolution for the work, without massive, cumbersome files.
The autofocus just works.The new AF with machine learning finally puts the SL3-P on the map against the competition, and our hands-on time genuinely surprised us. We love our M cameras because focus is one thing you never have to think about. The SL3-P has autofocus, but rather than being another feature you think about, it just works, and doesn't get in the way.
The SL system has a soul.So many mirrorless systems look great on paper but get in the way in practice. We are familiar with them all and we use them all, but most are cluttered with digital noise that takes the enjoyment out of the tools and the process. The SL3-P does the opposite.
The color is stunning.The color rendition from this new sensor is one of a kind, and maybe our current favorite.
Not for everyone, and that is the point.The SL3-P opens an exciting new chapter for Leica's professional systems, and we would love for it to be your entry into the SL System. If that is not the right move today, the same optics and the same soul are still within reach through an earlier SL body. At the end of the day, the SL System is really about the lenses, and any SL camera unlocks them.
