The Leica M EV1 and the Summilux-M 50mm f/1.4 in silver chrome, bought together for $12,890, which is $1,000 less than the two separately. This is the Classic Line 50 Summilux, the 1959 design brought back with the barrel and the round screw-in hood of the original, so it renders with the softer, more painterly character that the current ASPH deliberately corrects away. Behind it, the M EV1 is the first M with a built-in electronic viewfinder: a 5.76 MP panel over a 60 MP full-frame BSI sensor.

The pairing makes more sense than it first looks. A vintage-character lens wide open is exactly the case where an optical rangefinder tells you the least about what you are actually getting, and the M EV1's finder shows you the rendering, the exposure, and the focus plane before you commit. Two things to know going in: the Classic focuses to 0.7 m (27.5 in), where the ASPH version gets to 0.45 m, and the hood is a separate round screw-in piece rather than built into the barrel. A 1959 Design, Back in the Classic Line

Originally introduced in 1959, the 50mm Summilux-M f/1.4 returns as part of the Leica Classic Line. The design of the original has been refined for the demands of contemporary digital photography while keeping what made it worth reissuing: the speed and, above all, the signature bokeh at wide apertures. The round lens hood is part of the look.

The First M with a Built-In Viewfinder

The M EV1 puts a 5.76-megapixel, 0.5-inch electronic viewfinder into the M body, with 0.76x magnification, 100% frame coverage, diopter adjustment from -4 to +2, and an eye sensor that switches between the finder and the rear screen. With a fast, characterful lens like this one, seeing the actual rendering before the shutter fires matters more than it does with a clinically corrected optic.

Focus Aids for a Shallow Plane

Focus Peaking marks the sharp plane in color, Focus Aid magnifies at two levels, and Digital Zoom crops the JPG at 1.3x or 1.8x while leaving the DNG whole. Leica built these aids specifically for fast Summilux and Noctilux glass, where depth of field wide open leaves very little room for error.

60 MP, Three Resolutions

The 60-megapixel full-frame BSI CMOS sensor has up to 15 stops of dynamic range, and Triple Resolution Technology writes at 60, 36, or 18 megapixels so you can pick file size to match the job. 64 GB of internal memory sits behind the SD slot as a fallback or a second destination.

The M EV1 is handmade in Germany with a magnesium and aluminum housing, a clean front with no rangefinder window, diamond-pattern leatherette, and a body 46 g lighter than the black M11-P. The Summilux-M 50 in silver chrome is likewise made in Germany.
