An excellent compliment to the Leica SL system

I own a SL3, SL3s and now a SL3p. Each camera has its place but this brings the SL3 line in competition with Sony, Nikon and Canon regarding autofocus. Yes, the autofocus may not be on spec with Sony and Nikon’s latest cameras, but I find the SL3p to be as good as I need for editorial, photojournalism, portrait and an occasional bike race and track meet. Plus the new sensor is a sweet spot for most of my professional work - big enough to crop and small enough to manage on the back end.

The new SL3p sensor gives the same Leica colors as the SL3s and SL3. The files look great straight out of the camera. This significantly reduces my workflow and the very fast Leica Fotos app allows me to send photos directly to my clients in real time. They love it and can’t believe they’re getting the images so fast. I plan on keeping all three bodies but the SL3p will be my go to camera for most of my work going forward.

I also use a Sony a1 and a7r VI for certain work but I find myself reaching for those less and less. I prefer Leica glass despite the extra weight. The Leica SL3p menu is straight forward and easy to maneuver - way better than Nikon and Sony. I can change the menu on the fly. The body is better to hold onto too.

The SL3p is where I would start if I were just getting into Leica. This is a long term keeper.

top Notch Quality and Results.

Does everything well and allow the user to fine tune the menu selections to fit their style of photography. Video was fun to use in camera. An area worth examining is the LCD Brightness and EVF Brightness which is less bright in than on other Leica Cameras. While this makes the battery last longer, it also makes the camera more difficult to use in bright lighting conditions. A firmware update, ( with profuse apologies to Leica Marketing), is an option that I would approve of as a photographer.

The 44 MP BSI full-frame sensor delivers high detail resolution, up to 14 stops of dynamic range, and strong low-light performance, with subtle tonal gradations and excellent color rendering. When you need maximum resolution, Multishot mode produces images up to 176 MP.

Focus on Every Moment

Hybrid autofocus combines phase detection, depth mapping, and contrast measurement to recognize and track subjects, even in fast, dynamic scenes. Up to 40 fps with full AF support, 819 phase-detection AF points, and 5-axis image stabilization work together for speed and precise composition.

Video Without Limits

Shoot up to 8K open gate in the native 3:2 format to use the full sensor and keep maximum freedom when framing in post. For smooth motion, 5.9K at 60p and 4K at 120p are on hand, with ProRes, L-Log, and HLG for a professional pipeline.
