The Panasonic LUMIX S 2.0x Teleconverter (DMW-STC20) doubles the focal length of a short list of L-mount LUMIX S telephoto zooms while keeping autofocus, metering, O.I.S., and Exif communication intact. On the LUMIX S PRO 70-200mm F4 it gives you a 140-400mm; on the LUMIX S 100-500mm the usable range becomes 300mm to 1000mm. The cost is two stops of light, so that f/4 zoom works at f/8.

It is small for what it does, 41.6 mm long and 230 g, with dust, splash, and freeze resistance rated to 10 degrees below zero Celsius and eight elements in four groups including two ultra-high refractive index elements. Compatibility is the thing to check before you buy: Panasonic's chart covers the S-R70200, S-E70200, and S-R100500 and nothing else. Panasonic's compatibility chart lists three lenses for this teleconverter: the LUMIX S PRO 70-200mm F4 O.I.S. (S-R70200), the LUMIX S PRO 70-200mm F2.8 O.I.S. (S-E70200), and the LUMIX S 100-500mm F5-7.1 O.I.S. (S-R100500). On the 100-500mm the usable range with the 2.0x is 300mm to 1000mm. Other L-mount lenses, including the LUMIX S 70-300mm, are not on that list.

What Two Stops Costs You

Doubling the focal length costs two stops of light. The 70-200mm f/4 becomes a 140-400mm f/8, and the f/2.8 version becomes a 140-400mm f/5.6. Plan for higher ISO or slower shutter speeds in dim conditions, and expect autofocus to work harder than it does on the bare lens.

Full Electronic Handoff

Communication between lens and body stays intact, so metering, autofocus, and the lens O.I.S. keep working and Exif data records the corrected focal length and aperture. There is no separate mode to enable; mount it between body and lens and shoot.
