The Canon Extender RF 1.4x sits between the camera and a compatible RF telephoto and multiplies its focal length by 1.4x, turning a 500mm into a 700mm. Seven elements in four groups, using high-refraction low-dispersion glass, keep chromatic aberration in check so the image holds together instead of going soft and hazy at the long end. Metering, autofocus, stabilization, and Exif all keep working.

Read the compatibility list carefully, because this fits a short set of RF telephotos: the 400mm F2.8 L, 600mm F4 L, 600mm F11, 800mm F5.6 L, 800mm F11, 1200mm F8 L, 70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM Z, 100-300mm F2.8 L, 100-400mm F5.6-8, 100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L, and 200-800mm F6.3-9. On the RF100-500mm you have to zoom past 300mm before it will attach. It costs one stop of maximum aperture and will not stack with a second extender. Which Lenses It Fits

This is not a universal teleconverter. Canon lists it as compatible with the RF400mm F2.8 L IS USM, RF600mm F4 L IS USM, RF600mm F11 IS STM, RF800mm F5.6 L IS USM, RF800mm F11 IS STM, RF1200mm F8 L IS USM, RF70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM Z, RF100-300mm F2.8 L IS USM, RF100-400mm F5.6-8 IS USM, RF100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L IS USM, and RF200-800mm F6.3-9 IS USM. Note the Z on that 70-200: the original RF70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM will not take an extender. Nothing outside this list mounts, because the extender's front element protrudes into the rear of the lens and most RF designs leave no room for it.

What You Gain And Give Up

Focal length goes up by 1.4x, so a 500mm becomes 700mm and a 600mm becomes 840mm. Maximum aperture drops by one stop, which also means autofocus and viewfinder brightness have less light to work with. On slower lenses such as the RF600mm F11 and RF800mm F11 the effective aperture lands past f/11, so check your camera body's low-light AF limits before you count on it. Full electronic communication is retained, including metering, IS, and Exif.

Zoom Range Caveat

On the RF100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L IS USM the extender only clears the rear element from 300mm onward. You have to zoom the lens out to 300mm to attach it, and the usable range with the extender fitted becomes 300mm to 500mm (420mm to 700mm effective). The prime telephotos have no such restriction. Check the manual for your specific lens, since a few zooms carry similar limits.
