The Canon RF 100mm f/2.8 L Macro IS USM focuses to 1.4x magnification with autofocus, past the 1:1 limit where most macro lenses stop. At the other end of its range it works as a 100mm f/2.8 portrait lens, and the spherical aberration control ring on the barrel lets you dial the bokeh from soft and diffused to a hard-edged bubble look without touching the sharpness of the focal plane.

Most macro lenses stop at 1:1. This one keeps going to 1.4x, so a subject can be recorded larger on the sensor than it is in life, with autofocus still working. Minimum focusing distance is 26 cm measured from the sensor plane, which leaves a workable gap in front of the lens without crowding a nervous insect or throwing your own shadow on a product shot.

The SA Control Ring

Canon put a spherical aberration control ring on the barrel, and it is the reason a lot of people buy this lens. Turning it toward minus softens the rendering into a dreamy, diffused look; turning it toward plus pushes background highlights into a harder, bubble-edged bokeh. The plane of focus stays sharp either way. It is a genuine in-camera look, not a filter effect, and it applies to video as well.
