Wide Angle That Focuses Close

A 24mm that gets to 0.5x is a different tool from a 100mm macro. Because the focusing distance is only 14 cm from the sensor, you end up almost touching the subject, and the wide field of view keeps the surroundings in the frame behind it. You get the close detail plus the context, and more apparent depth of field at a given aperture than a telephoto macro gives you.

Bright Enough For Available Light

At f/1.8 this works indoors and after dark without pushing ISO into the ceiling. One UD element and one aspherical element handle the chromatic and spherical aberration that a fast wide angle tends to show, and Super Spectra coating helps when a light source is in or near the frame. Nine rounded blades keep out-of-focus highlights from going polygonal.

Small, Stabilized, Quiet

At 270 g and 63 mm long this barely counts as weight on an R body, and the 52mm filter thread makes filters cheap. Optical IS is rated up to 5 stops, or 6.5 stops working with in-body IS on a compatible camera.
