The Canon Extender RF 2x doubles the focal length of a compatible RF telephoto, so a 600mm f/4 works as a 1200mm and a 100-500mm reaches 1000mm. Nine elements in five groups carry the image through, and the lens keeps talking to the body: metering, autofocus, image stabilization, and Exif all pass through unchanged.

Two things to settle before you buy. First, the fit list is short: the 400mm F2.8 L, 600mm F4 L, 600mm F11, 800mm F5.6 L, 800mm F11, 1200mm F8 L, 70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM Z, 100-300mm F2.8 L, 100-400mm F5.6-8, 100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L, and 200-800mm F6.3-9, with the RF100-500mm limited to its 300mm to 500mm range once the extender is on. Second, you give up two stops, which turns an f/4 into an f/8 and pushes the f/11 primes to f/22, so think about the light you actually shoot in. Which Lenses It Fits

This mounts on a short list of RF telephotos and nothing else. Canon lists the RF400mm F2.8 L IS USM, RF600mm F4 L IS USM, RF600mm F11 IS STM, RF800mm F5.6 L IS USM, RF800mm F11 IS STM, RF1200mm F8 L IS USM, RF70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM Z, RF100-300mm F2.8 L IS USM, RF100-400mm F5.6-8 IS USM, RF100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L IS USM, and RF200-800mm F6.3-9 IS USM. The Z matters on that 70-200: the original RF70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM will not take an extender. The front element of the extender protrudes into the rear of the lens, which is why most RF designs cannot accept it at all.

Two Stops Is The Real Cost

Doubling the focal length costs two stops of maximum aperture. An f/2.8 telephoto becomes f/5.6, an f/4 becomes f/8, and the f/11 primes land at f/22. That affects autofocus in low light, viewfinder brightness, and how far you have to push ISO. On a fast L telephoto in daylight the tradeoff is easy; on a slow lens at dusk it is not.

Build And Handling

At 340 g and 39.3 mm long it is the bigger of the two RF extenders, though it still disappears next to the lenses it fits. The mount is sealed against dust and moisture and the exterior uses a heat shield, which matters when a white telephoto has been sitting in the sun. Metering, autofocus, image stabilization, and Exif all continue to work through it.
