Brand Nikon System Nikon AF

The Nikon SB-5000 AF Speedlight is Nikon's flagship shoe-mount flash and the one that brought radio control to the Creative Lighting System. Paired with a compatible body and Nikon's wireless remote hardware, it runs up to six groups of remotes at roughly 98 feet with no line of sight required, and it still speaks optical Advanced Wireless Lighting when you need to mix in older Speedlights. Guide number is 113 ft at ISO 100 and 35mm.

The part that matters on a long shoot is the built-in cooling system, a first for a hot-shoe flash, which lets the SB-5000 fire more than 100 consecutive full-power bursts without dropping out on thermal cutout. Recycle runs about 1.8 to 2.6 seconds on four AAs, the head tilts from -7 to 90 degrees and rotates 180 degrees each way on click stops, and the Info button puts the settings you actually change on one screen. Radio control depends on which camera and remote controller you pair it with, so call us before you build a system around it and we will sort out what your body needs.

Radio Plus Optical

With the right camera and Nikon's wireless remote hardware, the SB-5000 works as a radio master or remote covering up to six groups at roughly 98 ft (30 m), with no line of sight needed. Optical Advanced Wireless Lighting is still there for master plus three groups across four channels, and you can run optical and radio groups in the same setup. Radio control depends on specific camera and controller combinations, so confirm yours before you commit.

Runs Without Overheating

The built-in cooling system, a first on a hot-shoe flash, lets the SB-5000 fire more than 100 consecutive bursts at full output without tripping thermal cutout. Minimum recycle is about 1.8 seconds on Ni-MH cells and 2.6 seconds on alkalines, with roughly 190 or 150 flashes per set. The optional SK-6A power bracket and SD-9 battery pack cut recycle time further on long days.

Head And Controls

Auto zoom covers 24 to 200mm in FX, down to 14mm with the wide panel, and the light pattern adjusts itself to FX or DX with standard, even, and center-weighted options. The head tilts from -7 to 90 degrees and rotates 180 degrees to either side on click stops. Manual output goes 1/1 to 1/256, flash compensation runs plus or minus 3 EV in third stops, and a dedicated Info button pulls up the settings you change most.
