24mm to 200mm is an 8.3x span, wide enough for a room or a street corner and long enough for a stage or a distant ridge. On a DX body, or an FX body in DX crop mode, the long end works out to roughly 300mm equivalent. The tradeoff is aperture: you start at f/4 and you are at f/6.3 by 200mm, so this is a lens for good light more than a low-light specialist.

Steady Handheld

Optical VR is rated at 5.0 stops to the CIPA standard, measured on an FX body with the zoom at 200mm. On a full-frame Z camera the lens works alongside the in-body 5-axis system; on the DX-format Z 50 it provides 2-axis optical stabilization. That covers a lot of handheld shooting at shutter speeds you would otherwise skip.

Travel Build

570 g and 4.5 inches long, with sealing through the moving parts of the barrel and Nikon's fluorine coat on the exposed elements so water and fingerprints wipe away. Filters are a common 67mm thread.
