Why the PF Element Matters

A Phase Fresnel element replaces several conventional glass elements, which is how Nikon got a 600mm prime down to 278 mm long and 1,390 g without the tripod collar. That is under a foot and roughly three pounds, so this is a super-telephoto you can carry on a hike and hold to your eye. The cost of that approach is the f/6.3 maximum aperture and, in rare cases with a strong light source in or near the frame, ring-shaped PF flare.

Handling in the Field

The center of gravity sits back toward the mount, which makes panning starts and stops far less of a fight than with a front-heavy 600mm. Two programmable Fn buttons, a control ring, a Memory Set button and a focus limiter fall under your fingers, and the tripod collar rotates for vertical framing. A rubber grip near the front gives you a stable second hand position.

Reach, Stabilization and Video

Optical VR is rated to 5.5 stops on Z bodies and 6.0 stops on cameras that support Synchro VR. Add a Z teleconverter for up to 1200mm, or switch a body to DX crop for another 1.5x. For video, the stepping motor is close to silent, focus breathing is heavily suppressed, and the electromagnetic diaphragm gives stepless aperture changes while recording.
