Constant f/2.8 Telephoto

70mm to 180mm at a fixed f/2.8 covers most of what a telephoto zoom actually gets used for: portraits, events, stage work, field sports. Five ED elements, one super ED element, and three aspherical elements handle the correction, and a nine-blade rounded diaphragm keeps out-of-focus areas smooth. The honest limitation is the top end, 180mm rather than 200mm, and no VR in the barrel.

Light For Its Class

795 g and 151 mm long, which Nikon puts at over 40 percent lighter and smaller than the NIKKOR Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S. It takes 67mm filters, the same thread as the Z 17-28mm f/2.8 and Z 28-75mm f/2.8, so one set of polarizers and ND filters covers the whole trio. The barrel is sealed against dust and water droplets and the front element has an antifouling coating.

Close Focus And Teleconverters

Minimum focus is 0.27 m at 70mm with autofocus still working, giving a 0.48x maximum reproduction ratio, which is close to what a dedicated macro lens gets you at half life size. The lens accepts the Z TELECONVERTER TC-1.4x and TC-2.0x; with the TC-2.0x the reproduction ratio reaches 0.96x, near life size, and reach extends to 360mm.
