True 1:1 Macro

This is a real life-size macro, not a close-focus prime. At the 0.53 ft. (0.16 m) minimum focus distance the subject is reproduced at 1x on the sensor, so a grain of rice fills a meaningful part of the frame. Reproduction ratio and focus distance are both marked on the barrel, which helps when you are working to a repeatable setup.

Know The Working Distance

Because focus is measured from the focal plane, 0.16 m leaves only a couple of inches between the front of the lens and your subject at 1:1. That is fine for food, product, and copy work where you control the light, and it is a real constraint with insects or anything that spooks. If you need more room to work, the MC 105mm f/2.8 VR S is the better fit.

Small Enough To Keep On
