Sensor and Processor

A 24.3MP FX-format CMOS sensor (35.9 x 23.9 mm) sits behind the EXPEED 6 processor. Native ISO runs 100 to 51,200, expandable to 50 and 102,400, and files come out as 14-bit NEF raw or JPEG. Continuous shooting tops out at 4.5 fps, which is fine for portraits, travel and landscape work but not the choice for fast sports.

Stabilization and Focus

Five-axis sensor-shift VR is built into the body and rated to five stops with the NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/4 S at the long end. Adapted F-mount glass on the FTZ adapter gets three-axis correction. The hybrid AF system uses 273 phase-detect points with eye and animal detection, and it works down to -3 EV with low-light AF enabled.

Video and Its Limits

The Z5 records UHD 4K at 30, 25 and 24 fps, and Full HD up to 60 fps, with mic and headphone jacks on the side. Be aware that 4K uses a 1.7x crop of the sensor, so wide framing gets tight, and clips cap at 29 minutes 59 seconds. Full HD uses the whole frame and is the better mode for most handheld work.
