Vintage Optics: Standard Focal Lengths

Camera West SoHo - NYC

Part II of the Vintage Optics Masterclass series moves to Camera West Soho for three days in New York City, October 30 – November 1, working exclusively with standard focal lengths (40mm–60mm), a perspective that mirrors human vision: unembellished, immediate, and deeply cinematic. The program is about human proximity: stepping closer, waiting longer, and allowing the frame to breathe within the city’s natural rhythm.

Across late October’s fading light, the group moves through streets where daylight collapses quickly into shadow, storefront fluorescents, sodium-vapor streetlights, and passing headlights begin to define the image. Halloween brings a subtle distortion to the city: faces half-hidden, gestures heightened, the familiar made slightly strange. It is within this atmosphere that the program works, observing how lenses translate tension and ambiguity.

Part III Vintage Optics Masterclass series at Camera West Palm Springs, December 4–6, set against the quiet expanse of the desert and working with telephoto vintage optics. Longer focal lengths reveal a visual language of compression, isolation, and distance, how space collapses, how subjects separate from their surroundings, and how subtle shifts in perspective shape emotional tone. In contrast to the immediacy of shorter lenses, telephoto optics invite restraint: a step back, a quieter observation, a more deliberate relationship between subject and environment.

Within the elemental landscape of Palm Springs, earth, sand, open sky, and the distinctive warmth of desert light, the program focuses on portraiture that integrates both subject and setting. The clarity of the air, the softness of winter sun, and the extended golden hours create an environment where light becomes sculptural and time slows perceptibly.
