The Leica Macro-Adapter-M sits between a digital M body and an M lens and adds extension, which lets the lens focus far closer than it can on its own. With the Macro-Elmar-M 90mm f/4 it takes you down to 41cm for a 1:2 reproduction ratio, and because the extension is variable you can set any distance from 41cm out to infinity without unmounting the adapter.

It is a Live View accessory: the rangefinder does not couple at these distances, so you frame and focus on the screen or through an electronic viewfinder. Other M lenses work too, with 50mm and longer reaching roughly 1:2 and wide-angles going further, and the Macro-Elmar-M 90mm can stay collapsed and still focus to infinity. The extension is variable rather than fixed, so you can set any distance between 41cm and infinity without unmounting anything. With the 90mm Macro-Elmar you can even leave the lens collapsed and still focus all the way out.

Live View Is Required

The rangefinder does not couple at these distances, so this is a Live View accessory. On a Leica M with Live View you frame and focus on the screen or through an electronic viewfinder, which is also how you judge the tighter depth of field that comes with close work.

Not Only the 90mm

The adapter fits other M lenses as well. Leica lenses of 50mm and longer will reach roughly 1:2, and wide-angle lenses go further than that. It is worth testing your own lenses, since working distance gets very short as focal length drops and lighting the subject becomes the harder problem.
