The Leica R-Adapter M puts Leica R lenses on a digital M body. Nothing electronic or mechanical passes through, so focus and aperture stay manual, but the camera opens up a list of twenty dedicated R lens profiles. Pick your lens from the menu and the M writes it into EXIF and applies the matching correction, including vignetting correction on the last generation of R glass.

It is machined metal, roughly 94g, and comes with a removable tripod foot so a long R lens loads the plate instead of the camera mount. Live View is what makes the combination practical, since you cannot focus R lenses through the rangefinder, and an electronic viewfinder helps a lot at longer focal lengths. Twenty Lens Profiles

Nothing electronic passes between the R lens and the M body, but mounting the adapter unlocks a list of twenty dedicated R lens profiles in the camera menu. Choose your lens and the M writes it into EXIF and applies the matching correction. On the last generation of R lenses that also covers digital correction of corner vignetting.

Live View Does the Focusing

R lenses cannot be focused through the rangefinder, so this pairing depends on Live View. Any digital M body will take the adapter mechanically, including the M-E and the M Monochrom, but the experience is much better on a Live View camera. Adding an electronic viewfinder makes longer focal lengths and close work far easier to judge.

Removable Tripod Foot

The adapter includes a removable tripod foot, which matters once you hang a long or heavy R lens off a compact M body. Mounting from the foot puts the load where it belongs and keeps the balance sane on a tripod or monopod. Take it off when you are shooting handheld with something small.
