The Leica Ultravid 8x32 HD-Plus is the lightest full-size binocular in the Ultravid line at about 535 g, and it has the widest field of the 32 mm pair: 135 m at 1,000 m (404 ft at 1,000 yds). Fluoride lens elements keep color honest and contrast high, so small birds in mixed light still read clearly.

The body is magnesium with a titanium center hinge axle, nitrogen-filled and waterproof to 5 m. Focus runs from 2.1 m to infinity in under two turns of the wheel, which matters when a warbler moves from the branch above you to the next tree over. If you are choosing between 8x32 and a 42 mm model, come by and try both; the tradeoff is a smaller exit pupil (4 mm) in exchange for a lot less weight around your neck.

Light Enough to Carry

At about 535 g and 116 mm tall, the 8x32 is the Ultravid you bring on the hike instead of leaving in the car. It sits comfortably on a harness or in a jacket pocket for a full day out.

Wide, Easy View

A 135 m field at 1,000 m and 8x magnification make it easy to find a moving subject and keep it in view. Close focus of about 2.1 m also makes it useful for butterflies and garden birds.

Where It Gives Ground

The 4 mm exit pupil is less forgiving at dawn and dusk than a 42 or 50 mm Ultravid. For daylight birding, travel, and hiking, most people never notice; for low light, look at the 7x42 or 8x50.
