About That f/11

The aperture is fixed at f/11 with no diaphragm, so there are no blades to stop down or open up. You set exposure with shutter speed and ISO instead. Gapless dual-layer diffractive optics (DO) hold down chromatic aberration and keep the weight low, and optical image stabilization is rated at 5 stops to the CIPA standard on an EOS R, which is what makes handheld and monopod work realistic at this focal length.

Know Before You Buy

f/11 is a real constraint. In good light this lens is a pleasure; at dusk or under stadium lights you will be pushing ISO hard. The Extender RF 1.4x and RF 2x take you to 840mm and 1200mm, but each costs light, so effective aperture drops to f/16 and f/22. The lens takes 82mm front filters, and the ET-88B hood is sold separately. If you are deciding between this and a faster telephoto, come talk to us about the light you actually shoot in.
