Brand Canon System Canon R

The Canon RF 800mm F11 IS STM puts 800mm on a full-frame EOS R body in a lens that weighs about 2.77 lbs. and retracts to just over 11 inches. Gapless double-layer diffractive optics keep chromatic aberration down and hold the weight in check, so distant birds, wildlife, and aircraft are reachable without a tripod-only setup.

The barrel unlocks and extends to shoot and locks back down for transport, and the lead screw-type STM motor is quiet enough for video and for skittish subjects. Two things to plan around: the aperture is fixed at f/11 with no diaphragm, and stabilization is rated at 4 stops (CIPA, on an EOS R), so this lens wants good light and a fast shutter. If you are torn between this and the 600mm F11, give us a call and we will walk through it.

800mm, Handheld

This is 800mm of reach in a lens that weighs approximately 2.77 lbs. (1260 g) and collapses to 11.09 in. (281.8 mm) for the bag. Extend and lock the barrel and it runs to 13.85 in. (351.8 mm) for shooting. For distant birds, wildlife you cannot approach, or aircraft, it puts a focal length in reach that normally means a big white lens and a tripod head to match.

Fixed Aperture, DO Glass

There is no diaphragm in this lens. The aperture is fixed at f/11, so exposure comes down to shutter speed and ISO, and depth of field is whatever f/11 gives you at 800mm. Gapless double-layer diffractive optics control chromatic aberration and keep the element count and weight down, and the lead screw-type STM motor focuses quietly, which matters when the subject can hear you.

Read The Light First

Image stabilization is rated at 4 stops to the CIPA standard on an EOS R, a stop less than the 600mm version, and 800mm magnifies every bit of shake. Plan on bright light, fast shutter speeds, and a monopod when you can. The Extender RF 1.4x and RF 2x reach 1120mm and 1600mm but cost light, dropping effective aperture to f/16 and f/22. Front filters are 95mm and the ET-101 hood is sold separately. Talk to us if you are choosing between this and the 600mm F11.
