At 85mm this covers the classic portrait working distance, and because it focuses to 0.35 m it also gets you to half life-size (0.5x) without an extension tube or a second lens. That combination is unusual: most 85mm primes stop focusing around a meter out. It means one lens handles a headshot and then a ring, a watch dial, or a flower without a swap.

Stabilization For Close Work

Optical IS gives up to 5 stops of correction for normal shooting. Closer in, the lens switches to Hybrid IS, which corrects shift movement as well as angle.
