The Panasonic LUMIX S 14-28mm f/4-5.6 MACRO is an ultra-wide zoom for full-frame L-mount cameras that manages something most 14mm lenses cannot: it accepts ordinary 77mm screw-in filters. Fourteen elements in ten groups, including aspherical, ED, and UHR types, hold the correction together across a 114 degree field, and closest focus stays at 0.15m through the whole range for 0.5x magnification at the long end.

At 345g and 89.8mm long it is small for what it covers, and internal focusing means the barrel stays put. The construction is dust and splash resistant down to 14F, with a fluorine coating on the front element that makes cleaning easier. Focus breathing is minimized and the aperture steps in micro increments, so it holds up for video as well as stills. Filters on a 14mm

Most full-frame 14mm zooms use a bulbous front element that rules out screw-in filters and forces you into a bulky holder system. This one takes ordinary 77mm filters on the front, so a polarizer or an ND goes on the way it would on any other lens. That alone changes what the lens is worth to a landscape or real estate shooter.

Half Life-Size at the Long End

Closest focus is 0.15m across the whole zoom range, measured from the focus distance reference line, and at 28mm that works out to 0.5x magnification. It is not a flat-field 1:1 macro lens, but it gets you close enough for a detail shot without carrying a second lens, and at 14mm you can put the camera almost against a foreground subject and still hold the background.
