XD Motors for fast, precise, tenacious AF

Two XD (extreme dynamic) linear motors provide fast, precise AF and reliable tracking, bringing out the best in modern camera bodies and effortlessly maintaining accurate focus on fast-moving sports and wildlife subjects. A new control algorithm contributes to fast, quiet positioning of the large focus group with minimum delay and vibration.

Large XA element enhances image quality

An exacting G Master optical design maintains extremely high contrast right out to the image edges. A newly-developed large XA (extreme aspherical) element and three fluorite elements suppress chromatic aberration that can be a problem in telephoto lenses, achieving stunning resolution and detail throughout the image area.

Gorgeous G Master bokeh

In addition to including a new large-aperture XA (extreme aspherical) element with extremely high surface precision, each lens is individually calibrated to control spherical aberration so that gorgeous G Master bokeh is optimally balanced with high resolution. An 11-blade circular aperture further adds to the beauty of the lens’s smooth bokeh.

Extra reach with 1.4x/2.0x teleconverters2

Optional high-performance 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters are available. The 2.0x teleconverter extends the lens’s focal length to 1200mm (1800mm on an APS-C body) with F8 maximum aperture, while maintaining outstanding optical quality as well as AF speed and precision.

Flare resistant for superior clarity

Sony’s original Nano AR Coating, flocking on critical interior surfaces, and other design refinements minimize internal reflections so that the lens is highly resistant to flare and ghosting that can degrade image clarity. Rendering is crisp and clear even in difficult light. (1. Nano AR coating / 2. Glass / 3. Transmitted light).

Light and well-balanced for easy shooting

A low weight of just 3,040 grams and sublime balance, all thanks to technology inherited from the SEL400F28GM, make it possible to take full advantage of outstanding optical performance even when shooting handheld or on a monopod. With a compact, lightweight E-mount body, the center of gravity is ideally located for smooth, precise panning.

Dust and moisture resistant design3

A dust and moisture-resistant design provide the reliability needed for outdoor use in challenging conditions.

Fluorine front element coating

The front lens element features a fluorine coating that repels water, oil, and other contaminants while making it easier to wipe off any contaminants or fingerprints that do become attached to the lens surface.

Rigid magnesium alloy barrel components

A high-rigidity magnesium alloy used for the lens barrel exterior, tripod mount, and critical interior components provides the dual benefits of outstanding durability and reduced weight, both advantages when shooting in challenging situations and environments.

Rigid, durable mount design

Designed to withstand the rigors of professional use, the number of screws used to attach the mount has been increased and other refinements have been applied to ensure maximum rigidity and reliability.

Lightweight carbon fiber lens hood

This lightweight, durable carbon fiber lens hood also features a flocked interior that maximizes its effectiveness at blocking unwanted light that can degrade image quality.

Full-time DMF

When the FULL-TIME DMF switch is ON, manual focus is automatically engaged when the focus ring is operated, even in the AF-C mode. This capability can be used to correct focus when autofocus targets the wrong subject, for example. It is also a great way to refine focus after initial autofocus when shutter button half-press autofocus is disengaged.

Trunk-style dedicated hard case

A specially designed trunk-style carrying case protects the lens from shock and vibration during transportation.

Natural, linear manual focus response

Linear Response MF ensures that the focus ring responds directly and linearly to subtle control when focusing manually. Focus ring rotation translates directly to a corresponding change in focus, so control feels immediate and precise.

3-mode Optical SteadyShot

Optical image Stabilisation makes it easier to shoot sharp images handheld at super-telephoto focal lengths. MODE 2 offers ideal Stabilisation for panned shots, while MODE 3 provides enhanced viewfinder Stabilisation that allows easier framing of dynamic sports or wildlife action. 5-axis Stabilisation is available with compatible α bodies.

Versatile function ring

A versatile, convenient function ring can be switched to preset focus, assigned function control, or no function via the mode selector.

Four Customisable focus hold buttons

Customizable focus hold buttons are provided in four locations for easy access when shooting in any orientation. The focus hold buttons can also be customized via a camera menu that allows the assignment of other functions, such as Eye AF, as required.

Instantly focus to a predefined point

Once a predefined focus point has been memorized via the SET button, rotating the function ring will instantly recall the preset focus point if the PRESET mode is active. This is an ideal way to preset focus points for fast sports action, for example. It works in the AF and MF modes and is unaffected by focus range limiter settings.

Fast switching from full-frame to APS-C4

If the function ring mode switch is set to FUNCTION and the APS-C/full-frame switching function is assigned, the function ring can be rotated to instantly switch between APS-C and full-frame view angles (supported by the latest α9 software version).

Smooth power focus

If the function ring mode switch is set to FUNCTION and the power focus function is assigned, rotating the ring causes the lens to focus smoothly in the specified direction at a speed determined by the degree of rotation. Power focus is useful for executing smooth pull focus effects when shooting movies.

Durable, versatile tripod mount

The lens’s tripod mount is equipped with bearings that enhance durability while promoting smooth rotation. There are also 90° click stops that can be switched ON or OFF according to the user’s preference: ON for sure, fast 90° positioning, or OFF for reduced resistance and smooth rotation.

Slide-in filter slot5

A filter slot accepts standard 40.5mm ND and other filter types, as well as the optional VF-DCPL1 circular polarising filter. The VF-DCPL1 circular polarising filter can be rotated for optimum effect while installed in the lens.

Focus range limiter for faster focus

A focus range limiter switch makes it possible to limit the lens’s autofocus range to 4.5 through 15 meters, 15 meters to infinity, or allow full-range autofocus with no limit. This can speed up autofocus in some situations by preventing the lens from focusing on subjects outside the target range.

Footnotes:

  1. 1. With interchangeable-lens digital camera incorporating APS-C type image sensors.
  2. 2. The maximum aperture with the 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters is F5.6 and F8, respectively.
  3. 3. Not guaranteed to be 100% dust and moisture-proof.
  4. 4. α9 software must be updated to the latest version to activate APS-C/Full Frame selection functionality when this lens is used with the α9. Refer to the Sony support site for up-to-date function and camera body compatibility information.
  5. 5. A normal filter is initially installed in the filter slot. The filter is part of the lens’s optical system, and either the normal filter or circular polarizer should always be in place when using the lens. Be sure that a filter is installed before memorizing the focus point for the preset focus function.
